Kansas City Kansas Community College Aligns Workforce Training with Business Needs

September 16, 2025

The Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) has developed a workforce development model that addresses business demand at the speed of industry change. Through direct collaboration with companies, KCKCC designs training programs that match real-time skill gaps, eliminating the lag between hiring needs and talent availability.

A central feature of this approach is the Earn and Learn model. Companies hire program participants as employees from the start, placing them on payroll while they complete training. Students secure a steady income and real-world experience, while employers benefit from talent that is prepared to contribute immediately with the necessary skills to succeed.

Industry-Driven Program Design

KCKCC is in regular communication with the Wyandotte County business community. The school does not develop programs in isolation. Often, faculty and administrators work with company executives, HR leaders, and technical managers of local businesses to define precisely what skills are required for success on the job. These include not-so-common technical skills, workplace-specific processes, and safety standards.

“At the Wyandotte Economic Development Council (WYEDC), we see KCKCC as an indispensable partner in helping our community grow,” said Greg Kindle, President of WYEDC. “Their workforce programs are aligned to meet industry needs, built with direct input from employers who need talent today. Together, WYEDC and KCKCC create pathways that keep businesses competitive while ensuring residents have access to careers with real upward mobility. That collaboration is one of the greatest strengths of our community.”

Programs are built to match the operational realities of employers in advanced manufacturing, IT, cybersecurity, and other high-demand sectors. By aligning training directly with the competencies businesses require, KCKCC graduates enter the workforce fully prepared for the roles they are hired to fill.

Agile Curriculum Development

One of the biggest considerations for new business attraction and expansion site selectors is “Does the community have the workforce to support a company’s operations and growth targets?” For areas like Wyandotte County, speed to market is critical in workforce training.

When Panasonic began building its electric vehicle battery facility in the region, it required a trained pool of industrial maintenance technicians before operations launched. KCKCC responded by compressing a 16-week program into eight weeks, delivering it just two weeks after the semester began.

This rapid turnaround is possible because community colleges can launch workforce training programs under a workforce designation before the full academic curriculum approval process is complete. This agility ensures that talent shortages do not delay large-scale projects and business expansions.

“KCKCC has always prided itself on being responsive, but our adaptability is only half of the equation,” said Dr. Greg Mosier, President of KCKCC. “What truly makes the difference is our involvement with the community at every stage. We listen to employers, we listen to students, and we design training that serves both. Whether someone is advancing in their career or just starting out, our goal is to create opportunities that elevate them to the next level. That’s the power of being both flexible and engaged.”

Businesses Gain Skilled Workers, Students Gain Paychecks

In the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)-sponsored model, companies employ students first, then send them to KCKCC for targeted training. For this case, Panasonic covered tuition, fees, and instructor salaries, and even employs instructors stationed on campus. This setup ensures that training is consistent with the company's needs and eliminates the financial barrier for students.

For companies that cannot fill an entire cohort, KCKCC uses a consortium-based approach. Multiple employers commit to a shared class, each providing a smaller number of seats. The FAME (Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) program operates in this model, with students spending two days per week on campus and three days at their workplace.

Graduates leave with both academic credentials and significant work experience. For many, the starting salaries often exceed $55,000, and in some cases, students have reached six figures before completing their degree.

Supporting Tech and Data Center Growth

The Kansas City region is emerging as a hub for data center investment, which increases the need for IT specialists, cybersecurity professionals, networking and programming experts, and advanced electrical and maintenance technicians.

KCKCC is already developing talent pipelines for these roles. While data centers themselves may not employ thousands directly, they generate a ripple effect across the economy, creating demand in logistics, advanced manufacturing, and related industries. Training programs at KCKCC are designed to serve this entire ecosystem of support jobs.

Customized Training for Industry Partners

KCKCC develops programs for niche industry needs. The college recently designed a hybrid-format land surveying certificate program to address shortages in the profession, working directly with the Kansas Land Surveyors Association. The program blends online coursework with hands-on training and is built to meet licensure requirements, making it replicable across multiple states.

For large employers like Amazon, KCKCC provides on-site instruction, scheduling classes around shift changes to ensure working adults can participate. Removing transportation and time constraints increases access to education for employees who otherwise could not enroll.

What This Educational Model Means for Businesses

Traditional four-year universities often take years to design, approve, and launch a new academic program. In a fast-changing economy, that delay can result in missed opportunities for business growth.

KCKCC operates on a different timeline. Courses and training sequences can be adapted within weeks, not years, to reflect new technology, processes, or compliance requirements. By partnering directly with industry, KCKCC ensures that every training hour moves students closer to meeting current employer demand.

“At WYEDC, workforce development is an essential part of our organization,” said Monica Brede, Vice President of Business and Workforce Solutions at WYEDC. “We take an active role in ensuring that employers have access to the talent they need. That means working directly with KCKCC and our other educational partners, helping convene businesses, and identifying skills gaps before they become barriers. Our goal is to remove obstacles so that both companies and workers can thrive, and the partnership with KCKCC allows us to do that in a meaningful, measurable way.”

KCKCC Creates an Upskilling Workforce Landscape for Wyandotte County Workers

Employers in Wyandotte County and the broader Kansas City region can leverage KCKCC’s workforce development capabilities to solve skills gaps, accelerate hiring, and support expansion plans.
